---+ Installing KnoppixLKB to a USB Drive KnoppixLKB can be run from a USB drive. This may be a more convenient option than running from a CD if your computer can boot from a USB disk. ---++ Prerequisites * A "thumbdrive" or other USB disk with at least 1 GB space available. * Windows XP or later. * A system with BIOS support for booting from USB media. ---++ Creating a bootable USB drive 1 Download the KnoppixLKB CD image (the file ending in ".iso") from the [[http://uakari.ling.washington.edu/knoppixlkb/][KnoppixLKB download site]]. 1 Download [[http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/][Universal USB Installer]] 1 Insert your USB drive. Open My Computer and note what drive letter it's been assigned. 1 Run Universal USB Installer, and agree to the license agreement. 1 Under Step 1, pick "Try Some Other Live Linux ISO" from the drop-down list. 1 If you put your ISO file in the same directory as Universal USB Installer, it will find it automatically; otherwise, click the Browse button under Step 2 and select it. 1 Under Step 3, select the drive letter associated with your USB drive. You have the option of formatting the drive; note that checking this box will delete everything else on the drive you've picked, so be careful. 1 Click "Create". The system will take a few minutes to extract the files from the ISO image and copy them to your USB drive. ---++ Booting the USB drive This depends on your system; you may have to go into BIOS setup and enable booting from USB. Hints for specific systems are below: ---+++ Dell Tap F12 (or sometimes F11) once or twice while the Dell logo is on the screen to open a boot menu. This is most easily done during a cold boot because the logo appears for much longer than during a warm reboot. When the menu comes up, choose "USB Device" or (on some systems) choose "Hard Disk" and then select your USB drive from the sub-menu that pops up. On some systems it's not possible to boot from the front panel USB ports; if you have trouble, try moving the drive to the rear ports. ---+++ Macintosh Unfortunately, it's currently not possible to boot a USB device created this way on a Macintosh system. Macintoshes will only boot USB devices that contain a Mac-style GUID partition map.
