These instructions describe how to set up KnoppixLKB manually using an ISO image. The preferred method is now to install it as a !VirtualBox appliance. See KnoppixLKBVboxApp for instructions.

---++ Setup instructions
   1 Visit [[http://www.virtualbox.org/][VirtualBox.org]] and download the platform package for your operating system. For these instructions you will want version 4.0 or later; if you're using 3.x, use the [[KnoppixLKBVirtualBox][older]] install instructions instead.
   1 Install the !VirtualBox package.
   1 Download one of the [[http://uakari.ling.washington.edu/knoppixlkb/][Knoppix+LKB ISO images]]. You do _not_ need to burn the .iso file to a CD.
   1 Run !VirtualBox. Click "New" to open the Create New Virtual Machine wizard.
   1 Give the new machine a name, and choose "Linux" for the operating system and "Debian" for the version.
   1 The default base memory size of 384 MB will be enough to get started. If you work with complex grammars you will probably need to increase this later.
   1 On the Virtual Hard Disk screen, uncheck the "Boot Hard Disk" box. When you click "Next" (or "Continue" in the OS X version) a warning will appear; click "Continue" in the warning dialog.
   1 After clicking the "Finish" (OS X: "Done") button, you should see your new virtual machine listed in the main !VirtualBox window. However, it's not ready to boot yet -- we need to tell it where to find the CD image.
   1 Click on your new virtual machine in the left pane of the !VirtualBox window, then click "Settings" in the toolbar.
   1 Click "Storage" in the upper row of icons. ("1" in the screen shot below.) Note that in Windows this will appear on the left instead of on top of the window, but the dialog box is otherwise similar.
   1 In the left pane, you will see a CD icon with the word "Empty" next to it. Click that device slot to highlight it. ("2" in the screen shot below.)

   1 Select "Choose a virtual CD/DVD disk file" from the pop-up menu.
   1 Browse to the disk image you downloaded in step 2, select it, and click Open.
   1 _Optional:_ You may want to create a shared folder so you can copy files between Knoppix and your host operating system. To do this: 
      1 Click the "Shared Folders" icon at the top of the settings dialog. ("1" in the screen shot below.)
      1 Click the icon with a plus sign at the right side of the dialog. ("2" in the screen shot below.)
      1 In the "Folder Path" drop-down, select "Other", then choose the folder you want to share.
      1 Give the folder a name in the "Folder Name" box.    1 Click OK to close the settings dialog.
   1 Click "Start" in the toolbar to boot your new machine.
   1 Knoppix+LKB should now boot in a window. If you set up a shared folder, click the "Usage Notes.html" file on the desktop for details on how to use it.
   1 !VirtualBox may prompt you to upgrade your guest additions. It's safe to ignore this prompt; the upgrade won't work on the CD image, anyway.

Tested using !VirtualBox 4.0.4 on !MacOS X 10.6.6 and Windows 7 Enterprise 32-bit.
