M1 Ubuntu LKB

Due to the architecture of the M1 chip for newer Macbook's it is necessary to use an alternate method of configuring the UbuntuLKB Virtual machine.

Install UMT

Obtain and install the latest copy of the UMT Virtualization software: https://mac.getutm.app/

Download Virtual Hard Drive

Download the last ".qcow2" File from: https://uakari2.ling.washington.edu/knoppixlkb/

At the time of the latest edit of this wiki that file is named "m1-xubuntu+lkb 27-disk001.qcow2, and is 16GB

Create New Virtual Machine

1. Open UMT Virtualization software, and create a new virtual machine.
2. Select "Emulate" when given a choice between "virtualize" or "Emulate"
3. Under Operating System select: "Other"
4. Check the "Skip ISO Boot" Box under "advanced"
5. Under Hardware: select at least 1024 MB of Memory
6. Under Storage: Select 10GB
7. Under "Shared DIrectory" you may choose a directory on your computer that will become visible inside the VM, This is helpful in transfering files to and from the VM.
8. Name the VM "Ubuntu LKB", or some other name that will identify it for you.
9. Next you will select the Created VM in UTM's list of VM's, and click the Settings button in the Upper right hand corner.
10. Under "Drives" select IDE Drive, and click "Delete Drive"
11. Click "new Drive" and select "Import"
12. Select the .qcow2 file that was downloaded earlier. and press "open"
13. Under "QEMU", Make sure the "UEFI Boot" Checkbox is NOT checked and press save.
14. You should now be able to boot the Virtual Machine.
