[[http://www.tug.org/mactex/][MacTeX]] is an install package from the Tex User Group (TUG). It installs everything you need to edit and compile LaTeX. Beware: it's a large download (~1.2 GB). Uses Apple's standard installer.

For using phonetic characters usepackage tipa (is also installed). Codes are available in the TIPA manual at [[ftp://tug.ctan.org/pub/tex-archive/fonts/tipa/tipaman.pdf][TIPA Manual v1.3]].

[[http://fink.sourceforge.net/][Fink]] is a repository for Apple versions of common UNIX tools. The fink installer allows you to search for, download, and install various software packages, including LaTeX.

Though Fink is primarily a source installer, many of the Fink packages also come in binary form which you can download and install without having to build them. Fink provides a tool called =[[http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/users-guide/packages.php?phpLang=en#bin-dselect][dselect]]= that downloads binary packages.

---++ Using the Fink Package Manager

[[http://fink.sourceforge.net/][Fink]] is a repository for Apple versions of common UNIX tools. The fink installer allows you to search for, download, and install various software packages, including LaTeX.

   1 Install [[http://fink.sourceforge.net/][Fink]] following the directions on the website.
   1 Ensure that the OS X developer tools are installed on your machine. 
      1 Locate the [[http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/xcode/][XCode]] installer. If your purchased an OS X upgrade in the store, you'll have a developer tools CD. If you are using the version of OS X that came installed on your machine, search the harddrive for the Xcode installer.
      1 Install XCode. Do a custom install and make sure to include the X11 SDK package.
   1 In a terminal window type =fink list tetex=. This will show a list of all LaTeX-related packages that fink provides. The one you want is called =[[http://fink.sourceforge.net/pdb/package.php/tetex][tetex]]=. To install it type =fink install tetex=. Fink will prompt you with various questions about your computer's configuration. You can always take the defaults it suggests. Fink will then download =tetex= and various related packages, build and install them. This may take up to an hour or two. The terminal window will be filled with incomprehensible compiler output that you can ignore. When this is done, you will have a LaTeX distribution beneath the /sw directory. You can run =latex= _et.al._ from the command prompt.

---++ Using the Fink Package Manager with OS 10.5

   1 From the Fink website (10/26/2007 - for initial Leopard support): ''10.5 users who are starting a new Fink tree will need to do this via bootstrap, until a binary distribution gets generated. Download fink-0.27.8 [[http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?groupname=fink&filename=fink-0.27.8.tar.gz&use_mirror=internap][here]]. Instructions for installation here: [[http://www.finkproject.org/doc/bundled/install.php][http://www.finkproject.org/doc/bundled/install.php]].
   1 Run the ./bootstrap after you untar it the download in your home directory. Provide permissions and deal with settings (defaults seem to work).
   1 Run script to set path: /sw/bin/pathsetup.sh
   1 Close and restart terminal.
   1 Follow instructions above. If =fink list tetex= shows you etwa 154 packages and =fink install tetex= fails, try =fink selfupdate-rsync= and then run =fink update-all=. In my case, =fink list tetex= now displays results ''Information about 2467 packages...''. =fink install tetex= asked about which type of Ghostscript should be installed. Good luck.
